3 Beautiful Day Trips to Take in Miami

By Karla Jones

South Florida is known for its beauty - the people, the beaches, the water, and the scenery. Miami is also known for being a city with throngs of people from all across the world. When you need to slow down and truly relax for a few days, consider these three day trips as part of your luxury vacation.

Key Biscayne

When you're ready for a quieter, more picturesque view of South Florida, travel across the Rickenbacker Causeway to the island of Key Biscayne, just south of downtown Miami. You can enjoy the beautiful beaches and water of the Atlantic Ocean without all of the hype of the more popular South Beach. Spend the day enjoying the natural surroundings or enjoy any of the many activities. Key Biscayne is home to the Miami Seaquarium, Crandon Park Golf Course, and the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse.

See Florida in its most natural state with a trip to the Everglades - 1.5 million acres of sawgrass and swamps and home to more than a dozen endangered and nearly extinct species. Some areas are only visited by researchers, but there are plenty of opportunities to hike, canoe, and be one with nature. Because it's so close, you're only a quick drive back to civilization.

The Gables

Coral Gables, known as The Gables to locals, is just south of Little Havana. The Gables is a great place for upscale shopping, high-end restaurants, and a look at the local history of South Florida. The entire city has been built with a Mediterranean Revival style, thanks to James Deering and the 1914 construction of his Villa Vizcaya. His determination to keep the authenticity of his villa extended to bringing in materials from Spain and Italy. For years after, builders in Coral Gables mirrored his style, giving the city its unique look. Visit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, for a peek at a lavish American home fashioned after the palaces of Europe.

Any of these day trips allow you to get away from the sights and sounds of downtown Miami and enjoy more tranquil delights. Whether you explore nature or enjoy upscale dining and shopping in a new luxurious location, any of these options will help you relax during your luxury family vacation.
